Funerals
The funeral of Gemma Louise Wright, aged 39 of Birmingham Road, Ansley was held at St Laurence Church on Friday 10th May, followed by burial in the churchyard.
On Tuesday 14th May, the funeral of Tony John William Worrall aged 87 of Pipers Lane, Ansley was held at St Laurence Church. This was followed by burial in the churchyard.
Area for the Burial of Cremated Remains (ABCR)
The PCC have been advised that they have been successful in obtaining £5,000 towards the costs of materials for the new memorial that will be installed in the churchyard. This, together with the offer of £3,000 from the parish Council and donations already received, will be a help towards the full cost of this memorial. As mentioned in the March magazine this is an important project, especially for the families of those whose remains will be interred in this new area of the churchyard. If anyone wishes to contribute to this project, or to see the plans, do please have a word with one of the wardens. This area and the memorial are expected to provide for the parish’s needs for at least the next one hundred years.
Party in the Park
Both St John’s and St Laurence’s have been allocated space for stalls at the Parish Council’s Party in the Park on Sunday 16th June at Ansley Recreation Ground. Entry is free to this community event. Refreshments will be on sale.
St John’s are providing games to play and plants for sale. St Laurence will display some of the Ansley 2000 history and leaflets will be available. History of the Church leaflets will be for sale. The theme this year is ‘Best of British’, so we will have bunting as well. If anyone can help on the day, it will be much appreciated.
St John’s Bingo Report
The session held on Monday 13th May was a really enjoyable, fun evening for all who came. The new team that took on the organising went to a lot of trouble making sure everything went to plan and had chosen lovely prizes. A good time was had by all. As requested, further sessions are being planned and dates will be circulated as soon as they have been arranged.
Garden Working Party
We wish to say a big thank you to the Ansley Gardening Group Working Party that came at the beginning of April and again on 4th May to tidy the churchyard. They achieved a lot and the new planting in the beds is looking good. The recent warm weather meant the plants needed watering despite all the wet weather we have had. More working parties are planned both in the churchyard and around Ansley Village in the run up to the “Britain in Bloom” judging day on 19th July.
Ansley Open Gardens
This event will be on Sunday 30th June from 1.30 to 6.30 p.m. There will be a combined entry fee of £6.00 for the nine gardens. Children have free entry. Tea and cakes will be on sale in some of the gardens. The open gardens will be 1, Park Cottages, 25, Birmingham Road, 33, Nuthurst Crescent, 5, Mary Carroll Close, 6, Mary Carroll Close, 79, Birmingham Road , Hood Lane Farm, The Old Chapel and The Old Police House.
Acorn Children’s Hospice
For over thirty years we have supported the Hospice each year with a donation from our flower festival proceeds. As a thank you they invited two of us to go to their Selly Oak hospice for their Thank You Week Afternoon Tea Event.
We were entertained by a ukulele band and offered tea and cake etc., followed by some of the many staff giving short “Thank You” presentations. After this we were taken around part of the site.
It was such a moving experience to tour the different rooms and see just how much care is taken of both the children and their families. The beautiful gardens, despite the rain, offered a valuable haven of peace.
It is hoped that, although this year is our final flower festival under the current pattern, we will be able to find a way to continue our support of such a worthy cause.

Vinnie’s Story
In his short life Vinnie has had three major open heart surgeries to help stabilise his condition and preserve his heart.
For his parents, Claire and Ben, Acorns Children’s Hospice has become a real life-line. They describe it as ‘a safe place, with real-life superheroes.’ Because of his condition Vinnie can’t go to a friend’s house and play or stay over. But at Acorns he gets the care he needs, his medications and he is safe.
Prayer Requests
If you would like someone or a particular situation to be remembered in prayer, please make contact with the church by email or phone one of the numbers on the front cover.
