From the Registers
Funeral
The funeral of Maureen Lewis, aged 77, was held on 4th June, followed by cremation at Nuneaton Crematorium. Some of her grandchildren spoke of her great love of family and said that she was willing to help anyone.
Interments of ashes
On Sunday 26th May, the family of Romaine Forryan (a former member of the evening congregation) brought her ashes back to Ansley. They were interred in the Garden of Peace to be with those of her husband Stan.
The ashes of William Tilling of Ansley Common, who died in March, were interred in the churchyard on 19th June.
Norman and Joan Worrall’s ashes were interred n the grave of Norman’s parents on 21st June. They had emigrated to Australia and their family brought them back to Ansley. Their children gathered from both Australia and America to attend the short service in the churchyard. Norman was 93 when he died in 2022 and Jean was 87 when she died in 2016.
Special Service at St Wilfrid’s
On Sunday 14th July at 10.30 a.m., the Reverend Peter allan will be visiting St Wilfrid’s to celebrate forty years since his ordination.We have been invited to join him at the service and/or for refreshments there after the service. If you wish to go do please let us know so we can let St Wilfrid’s team know how many to cater for. We are holding our service on that day at St Laurence as not everyone will be able to get to St Wilfrid’s. We send our best wishes to Peter as he celebrates this special occasion.
First Steps – Sharing Jesus in Your Everyday
The last session of this course, which has been held around the Ley Group parishes, will be at 7.30 p.m. in the Annexe at St Laurence on Wednesday 10th July. You will be very welcome to come along- you do not need to have attended the previous sessions.
Prayer Group
The next meeting will be held at St John’s at 2.00 p.m. on Tuesday 23rd July.
Girls Brigade
On Thursday 4th July the Girls Brigade will be holding their annual awards night at 6.00 p.m. at St John’s. Everyone will be most welcome to come. It is always fascinating to see just how much variety is involved and the amount the brigade achieves in a year.
They are also planning a fundraising Quiz night on 11th July. The cost will be £1 per child and £2 per adult. Further details will be available nearer the date. Your support will be very much appreciated by this hard working group.
St John’s Bingo
The next Prize Bingo will be on Monday 15th July. Eyes down at 7.00p.m. this will be a fun evening for all and there are very good prizes to be won.
Britain in Bloom
The Britain in Bloom Group are having a working party on Saturday 6th July in St Laurence churchyard. Bring your own tools, a strimmer would be useful! They will appreciate any help you can give to make their first entry in this national competition a success. They have already done a lot of hard work in the churchyard as well as in Ansley Village, especially at the church hall. The fence has been painted and troughs, hanging baskets and borders created as part of this project. The judging will be on the morning of Friday 19th July.
World Day of Prayer

This very poignant acknowledgement fully reflects the service we held at St John’s .
D Day Memorial Event
Ansley Ringers, along with many other bell ringers around the country, responded to the guild’s request to a “Ringing for Peace” session to mark the seventieth anniversary of the Normandy landings. So at 12.30 on 6th June the Ansley bells were rung for half an hour. We along with many other churches acknowledged the significance of this special anniversary as we rang out for peace. The details will be sent to the guild and kept on their files for posterity.
Party in the Park
St John’s activity went well and the St Laurence team were pleased with their display boards. It was good to be part of the event and to have the opportunity for conversations. The organisers were extremely pleased with the number of visitors and the weather was dry and sunny.
Ansley Open Gardens
We would like to apologise profusely for an error in one of the Open Garden addresses. It should have been 35, Nuthurst Crescent, not 33. We hope visitors found their way to the correct garden and that the neighbour was not inconvenienced.

Ansley Village Church Hall
We are very grateful to the Barrs family for the help given to clear the scrubby hedge and undergrowth at the rear of the hall earlier this year. The cleared area was fenced off until further work could be done. We are grateful to Clive Mander who came with his digger and prepared the ground for a layer of hard core. Incidentally Clive’s Great Grandfather gifted the land at the rear of the hall to the church when the hall was first built. We are also grateful to the Barrs family for removing excess soil and bringing in the hard core. The work done has provided additional parking space for hall users and allowed more light into the area. The extra space, with the new parking area accessed from Galley View will be of great help to hall visitors.
Finance
Thank you to those people who have recently increased their regular giving. This is a great help, especially with the economic situation at the present time. Please remember that we are always happy to receive donations in any form and for any amount. However, if you are not able to afford to increase your giving, or you have to reduce the amount you would normally give, please do not feel uncomfortable. Your prayers are equally, if not more, important than the finances.
The New Area for the Burial of Cremated Remains
We are pleased to let you know that we have now received the faculty (permission) for the memorial which will be at the front of the new area set aside for cremated remains. This memorial will be for all whose remains are interred in this area. There will be a separate stone where the names of loved ones can be engraved. This will be done annually as required. It will be necessary, as it is currently, to get permission by applying via a monumental mason in order to have names added to this or any other stone in the churchyard. Families may place fresh flowers or wreaths in the designated space around this memorial. No flowers, wreaths or markers are to be left on the plot used for the ashes. A record will be kept in the church registers of where each plot is sited within the area.
Please do speak to one of the churchwardens if you would like to contribute to the cost of this memorial.
Please note that there will be no new interments in the existing Cremation Garden as all the plots have been used. Only those with permission to go into an existing plot can be placed in this area.
Flower Festival 2024
The success of our past flower festivals has only been achieved because of the generous help given by many people, before during and after the event. Below are some reminders of what will need to be done.
Before: It would be much appreciated if you could do some tidying in the churchyard, when it suits you and/or on Monday 12th August. On Thursday 22nd August there will be jobs for gofers to help those setting up the displays. Making a cuppa for the workers is always welcome. On Friday 23rd August help will be needed to clean the Annexe and later the church. Other jobs will include setting up the gazebos and moving furniture etc. Volunteer lists will be available to fill in names for tasks to be done during the event.
During: Welcoming visitors and handing out programmes, making cakes, donating produce, serving refreshments, selling produce and also raffle tickets. it is also good to have people around to chat to visitors and make them feel welcome.
After: Help with tidying up and cleaning after the event will also be needed.
Do please let us know if you can help before, during and/or after the event. A busy few weeks lie ahead!
Watering Cans
Over 40 years ago the church was given two metal watering cans to join the smaller one it already had. Soon after another, larger, can was given
However over the last few months, first the big one disappeared then one week the small one also disappeared and one of the others was badly damaged. It now has a big dent and a hole half way up. It is such a sad and strange occurrence that three of our four cans are no longer available. The metal cans have been ideal for the churchyard as plastic ones would just blow away.
