Well, the anticipation, excitement and expectation is all over as we (England) lost in the semi-final of the football world cup but personally, considering the opposition they faced, I say, ‘Well Done England.’
My son brought me quite a lot of Rhubarb from his allotment and I wondered if I could make Rhubarb Jam. It was not in my Good Housekeeping cookery book, but in Mrs. Beaton’s cook book there was a recipe for Rhubarb Jam. However, on reading it I decided not to use it. In those days all the cooking was done on an open fire, which took ages and she added Lemon Rind and Ginger. In fact all Mrs. Beaton’s recipes are long winded and the amounts of ingredients would not be possible today.
One of our favourite games when we were young was Hopscotch, but perhaps you don’t know that it dates back to Ancient Britain when we were under the Roman Empire. It started as a military exercise for Roman soldiers. The courts were about 100 feet long (30 metres). The soldiers would run through the courts wearing full armour and carrying heavy bags. Children were fascinated by this exercise, so they started drawing their own smaller courts and making their own rules for the game. The game spread to different countries across Europe and later to other parts of the world. I have drawn many hopscotch courts for my children and grandchildren.
If I sat down and thought of all the things I haven’t got
And numbered all the things I want,
Gosh there would be a lot!
No doubt I’d either weep or moan and my ill- luck deplore.
Much better adding up my joys and find them by the score.
