Trinity 6 Holy Communion at St Laurence

Hymn Father Hear the Prayer We Offer

1 Father, hear the prayer we offer:
not for ease that prayer shall be,
but for strength that we may ever
live our lives courageously.

2 Not for ever in green pastures
do we ask our way to be;
but the steep and rugged pathway
may we tread rejoicingly.

3 Not for ever by still waters
would we idly rest and stay;
but would smite the living fountains
from the rocks along our way.

4 Be our strength in hours of weakness,
in our wanderings be our guide;
through endeavour, failure, danger,
Father, be thou at our side .
(by Love M. Whitcomb Willis (1824 to 1908)

The Greeting

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

All:       And also with you

The Peace

We are the body of Christ.

In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace

and builds up our common life.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

All:       And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

(Please turn to those around you, offering your hand, and say

‘The peace of the Lord be with you’)

Prayer of Preparation

All:      Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer of Penitence

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our Cod is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your Cod with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’

The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All:       Amen. Lord, have mercy.

God so loved the world

that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ

to save us from our sins,

to be our advocate in heaven,

and to bring us to eternal life.

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith,

firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments

and to live in love and peace with all.

All:       Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen.

Almighty God,

who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All:       Amen.

Collect for the 6th Sunday of Trinity –

Merciful God,

you have prepared for those who love you

such good things as pass our understanding:

pour into our hearts such love toward you

that we, loving you in all things and above all things,

may obtain your promises,

which exceed all that we can desire;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever

All: Amen

Our First Reading is Colossians Chap: 2

6 Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him.

7 Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving.

8 See to it, then, that no one enslaves you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from the teachings handed down by human beings and from the ruling spirits of the universe, and not from Christ.

9 For the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity,

10 and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.

11 In union with Christ you were circumcised, not with the circumcision that is made by human beings, but with the circumcision made by Christ, which consists of being freed from the power of this sinful self.

12 For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ through your faith in the active power of God, who raised him from death.

13 You were at one time spiritually dead because of your sins and because you were Gentiles without the Law. But God has now brought you to life with Christ. God forgave us all our sins;

14 he canceled the unfavorable record of our debts with its binding rules and did away with it completely by nailing it to the cross.

15 And on that cross Christ freed himself from the power of the spiritual rulers and authorities; he made a public spectacle of them by leading them as captives in his victory procession.

This is the word of the Lord.

All:      Thanks be to God.

Hymn – What a friend we have in Jesus,

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
    all our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    everything to God in prayer!
    O what peace we often forfeit,
    O what needless pain we bear,
    all because we do not carry
    everything to God in prayer!

  1. Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged;
    take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Can we find a friend so faithful
    who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness;
    take it to the Lord in prayer!

  1. Are we weak and heavy laden,
    cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Saviour, still our refuge–
    take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Do your friends despise, forsake you?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
    In his arms he’ll take and shield you;
    you will find a solace there.

Here the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to – Luke Chap: 11

1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

2 Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say this: “Father: May your holy name be honored; may your Kingdom come.

3 Give us day by day the food we need.

4 Forgive us our sins, for we forgive everyone who does us wrong. And do not bring us to hard testing.’ “

5 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Suppose one of you should go to a friend’s house at midnight and say, “Friend, let me borrow three loaves of bread.

6 A friend of mine who is on a trip has just come to my house, and I don’t have any food for him!’

7 And suppose your friend should answer from inside, “Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’

8 Well, what then? I tell you that even if he will not get up and give you the bread because you are his friend, yet he will get up and give you everything you need because you are not ashamed to keep on asking.

9 And so I say to you: Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

10 For those who ask will receive, and those who seek will find, and the door will be opened to anyone who knocks.

11 Would any of you who are fathers give your son a snake when he asks for fish?

12 Or would you give him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?

13 As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God.

Sermon

Church prays against a disreputable business next door.

“Lord, teach us to pray.”

A powerful request. A few simple words, but they open up something deep and meaningful.

Said by disciple. A question many of us have asked.

We all. want to connect with God, but often we’re not sure how. Comforting to know that even Jesus’ closest friends needed help with prayer.

They’d seen Jesus pray constantly. At big moments and quiet ones.

He prayed at his baptism, before choosing the disciples. When things were tough and when he needed clarity.

He prayed alone and with others.

Prayer shaped Jesus’ life, and the disciples noticed.

So, one of them finally says,

“Lord, teach us to pray,”

Jesus answers, not with a long lesson or lecture, but with a prayer.

“When you pray,” he says, “say: Father.”

Just that: Father.

Not a big, fancy title. Not a list of God’s credentials.

Just:  Father.

Jesus invites us into a relationship that’s personal, trusting, and close.

Not only that – it’s shared.

Not “my Father “ but our Father.

This prayer is meant to connect us to God, but also to each other.

It’s both personal and communal.

The rest of the prayer is simple too:

“Hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,

Give us each day our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.

And don’t bring us to the time of trial”

It’s a prayer that holds together our whole life, our worship, our needs, our relationships, and our struggles.

  • It reminds us to keep God’s name holy.
  • It asks for God’s kingdom to come into the world.
  • It gives space to name our needs – our daily bread.
  • It challenges us to seek forgiveness and extend it to others.
  • And it asks God to guide us when life gets hard.
  • It’s not just words.
  • It’s a way of life.

Luke’s version of the prayer (bit shorter than the Sunday church one) still makes one thing really clear –

Jesus wants us to bring our whole selves to God, our joys and our worries, our needs and our hopes.

And then Jesus tells a little story.

And the point of that story is this: be persistent.  Keep praying. Keep asking, seeking, and knocking.

Because God hears. And God responds.

Prayer isn’t always easy. It’s something we grow into. It’s not just something we say when we need help – it’s a habit. A rhythm. A way of staying grounded in God’s presence.

It takes practice.

  • Sometimes it’s quiet.
  • Sometimes it’s a cry for help.
  • Sometimes it’s just sitting still with God.

There was a thinker and writer about God stuff called Karl Barth, and he once said:

“To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the world.”

Because prayer changes things. And often, the first thing it changes is us.

It shifts our perspective, softens our hearts.

Helps us see others the way God sees them.

It roots us in hope when the world feels uncertain.

But-

Prayer doesn’t have to be perfect.

  • We’re praying when we read Scripture and take it to heart.
  • When we sing words that speak truth-
  • When we show kindness, forgive someone, or speak gently

A life of prayer isn’t always neat or pretty words. But it is honest. And it’s powerful.

So, if you’ve ever felt unsure about how to pray or if you’ve struggled with what to say- just know, you’re not alone. Even Jesus’ disciples had to ask.

And Jesus didn’t give them a complicated answer. He gave them a prayer- simple, memorable, and Life, changing.

So today, we ask the same thing:

Lord, teach us to pray.

And may that prayer shape our hearts, guide our steps, and bring us closer to God and to one another.

Amen

We say together

Hymn Wonderful Grace

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord is here.

All:      His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts,

All:       We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All:      It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right,

it is our duty and our joy,

at all times and in all places

to give you thanks and praise,

holy Father, heavenly King,

almighty and eternal God,

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

For he is your living Word;

through him you have created all things from the beginning, and formed us in your own image.

All:       To you be glory and praise for ever.

Through him you have freed us from the slavery of sin, giving him to be born of a woman and to die upon the cross;

You raised him from the dead and exalted him to your right hand on high.

All:       To you be glory and praise for ever.

Through him you nave sent upon us your holy and life-giving Spirit, and made us a people for your own possession.

All:       To you be glory and praise for ever.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

All:       Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Accept our praises, heavenly Father,

through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,

and as we follow his example and obey his command,

grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit

these gifts of bread and wine

may be to us his body and his blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

All:      To you be glory and praise for ever.

Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup

we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.

All:       Christ has died: Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

All:      To you be glory and praise for ever.

Through him, and with him, and in him, m the unity of the Holy Spirit,

with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise;

All:      Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever.

Amen.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name;

Thy kingdom come;

Thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

All:       Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

All:      Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world.

Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

Have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

Grant us peace.

Hymn – Ye Holy Angels Bright

  1. Ye holy angels bright,
    who wait at God’s right hand,
    or through the realms of light
    fly at your Lord’s command,
    assist our song,
    for else the theme
    too high doth seem
    for mortal tongue.

  1. Ye blessèd souls at rest,
    who ran this earthly race,
    and now, from sin released,
    behold the Saviour’s face,
    his praises sound,
    as in his sight
    with sweet delight
    ye do abound.

  1. Ye saints, who toil below,
    adore your heavenly King,
    and onward as ye go
    some joyful anthem sing;
    take what he gives
    and praise him still,
    through good and ill,
    who ever lives.

  1. My soul, bear thou thy part,
    triumph in God above,
    and with a well-tuned heart
    sing thou the songs of love;
    let all thy days
    till life shall end,
    whate’er he send,
    be filled with praise.
    (by Richard Baxter – 1681)
