Hymn – Go, Tell Us on the Mountain,
Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you
All: And also with you
Loving Lord,
Fill us with your life-giving,
joy-givingr peace-giving presence,
That we may praise you now with our lips,
and all the day long with our lives
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Cast your burden upon the Lord
All: And he will sustain you
Create in us clean hearts, O God
All: And renew a right spirit within us
Cast us not away from your Presence
All: And take not your Holy Spirit from us
Give us the joy of your saving help
All: And sustain us with your life-giving Spirit
Blessed be the Lord day by day
All: The God of our salvation, who bears our burdens.
We have a moment of quiet, to call to mind the things we
Have thought, said and done which we know grieve the God
who loves us
Come, let us return to the Lord and say:
All: Almighty God
Long-suffering and of great goodness
I confess to you.
I confess with my whole heart
My neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments
My wrong doing, thinking and speaking:
The hurts I have done to others,
And the good I have left undone.
O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;
And raise me to newness of life;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
May the God of love and power
Forgive us and free us from our sins,
Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,
And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.
We praise God for his love and forgiveness with:-
Our First Reading is from – 1 Corinthians Chap: 12
1 Now, concerning what you wrote about the gifts from the Holy Spirit. I want you to know the truth about them, my friends.
2 You know that while you were still heathen, you were led astray in many ways to the worship of lifeless idols.
3 I want you to know that no one who is led by God’s Spirit can say “A curse on Jesus!” and no one can confess “Jesus is Lord,” without being guided by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.
5 There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served.
6 There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service.
7 The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.
8 The Spirit gives one person a message full of wisdom, while to another person the same Spirit gives a message full of knowledge.
9 One and the same Spirit gives faith to one person, while to another person he gives the power to heal.
10 The Spirit gives one person the power to work miracles; to another, the gift of speaking God’s message; and to yet another, the ability to tell the difference between gifts that come from the Spirit and those that do not. To one person he gives the ability to speak in strange tongues, and to another he gives the ability to explain what is said.
11 But it is one and the same Spirit who does all this; as he wishes, he gives a different gift to each person.
This is the word of the Christ
All: Praise to you oh Christ
Our Second Reading is From – John Chap: 2
1 Two days later there was a wedding in the town of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,
2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
3 When the wine had given out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They are out of wine.”
4 “You must not tell me what to do,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
5 Jesus’ mother then told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 The Jews have rules about ritual washing, and for this purpose six stone water jars were there, each one large enough to hold between twenty and thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill these jars with water.” They filled them to the brim,
8 and then he told them, “Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast.” They took him the water,
9 which now had turned into wine, and he tasted it. He did not know where this wine had come from (but, of course, the servants who had drawn out the water knew); so he called the bridegroom
10 and said to him, “Everyone else serves the best wine first, and after the guests have drunk a lot, he serves the ordinary wine. But you have kept the best wine until now!”
11 Jesus performed this first miracle in Cana in Galilee; there he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.
This is the word of the Christ
All: Praise to you oh Christ
Sermon Notes for the First Second Sunday of Epiphany
The Spirit gives us gifts we need to listen to know what those gifts are and to use them.
Jesus was very special and for 30 years Mary knew that but did not act until at the wedding in Cana.
We don’t know what Mary expected Jesus to do, but she acted even so.
Jesus the Saviour of the world acts.
He cares and is there for us too.
Amen
Hymn – O Love that will not let me go
- O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be. - O Light that foll’west all my way,
I yield my flick’ring torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be. - O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be. (by George Matheson -1842 to 1906)
