As February comes around, many of us start thinking about Valentine’s Day. It’s a time to celebrate love and relationships—with flowers, chocolates, or just thoughtful gestures. But beyond the hearts and roses, it’s also a chance to think about a deeper kind of love—the love God has for us, which we reflect on as Lent begins and we look toward Easter.
Valentine’s Day is all about showing the people in our lives that we care. Whether it’s a partner, a friend, or a family member, it feels good to say, “You’re important to me. I love you.” In a similar way, Lent invites us to take some time to reconnect with God, the source of all love. It’s a season to think about the incredible love Jesus showed by giving His life for us and to let that love deepen our faith and the way we treat others.
Lent starts on Ash Wednesday (5th March) and lasts 40 days, leading up to Easter. It’s a time for prayer, fasting, and helping others. These practices help us refocus on what really matters and remind us of the amazing love that led Jesus to the cross. Just like Valentine’s Day encourages us to show love through gifts or kind gestures, Lent encourages us to give back to God through sacrifice, service and time spent in reflection.
At first, Valentine’s Day and Lent might not seem connected but both are about love in action. On Valentine’s Day, love might mean giving someone a special gift or taking the time to share a meaningful moment. During Lent, love means turning our hearts back to God and finding ways to care for those around us. Both remind us to live out love, not just talk about it.
As Lent approaches, let Valentine’s Day remind you how central love is in our lives. Celebrate the people you care about, but also take time to think about God’s incredible love for you. This season is a chance to share that love—through kindness, forgiveness, or helping those in need.
So this Valentine’s Day, as you tell others how much they mean to you, take a moment to reflect on God’s love too. Let it guide you as you move through Lent and head toward the hope and joy of Easter, where love wins over everything.
