Songs of Praise at St John’s

Welcome to our Service of Songs of Praise for Palm Sunday

Each of the Hymns and Reading have been chosen by members of the St. John’s Congregation’s.

Hymn – Ride on, ride on in majesty

1 Ride on, ride on in majesty!
Hark! All the tribe’s hosanna cry.
O Saviour meek, pursue your road,
with palms and scattered garments strowed.

2 Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die.
O Christ, your triumphs now begin
o’er captive death and conquered sin.

3 Ride on, ride on in majesty!
The angel armies of the sky
look down with sad and wondering eyes
to see the approaching sacrifice.

4 Ride on, ride on in majesty!
Your last and fiercest strife is nigh.
The Father on his sapphire throne
awaits his own anointed Son.

5 Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die.
Bow your meek head to mortal pain,
then take, O God, your power and reign.

Dedication of The Palm Crosses

Hymn – All glory, laud and honour

1 All glory, laud, and honour
to you, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel
and David’s royal Son,
now in the Lord’s name coming,
the King and Blessed One.

2 The company of angels
is praising you on high;
and we with all creation
in chorus make reply.
The people of the Hebrews
with palms before you went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before you we present.

3 To you before your passion
they sang their hymns of praise;
to you, now high exalted,
our melody we raise.
As you received their praises,
accept the prayers we bring,
for you delight in goodness,
O good and gracious King!
 (by Theodulf, Bishop of Orléans, (760 to 821)

Our First Reading is Taken from – Zechariah Chap: 9

9 Rejoice, rejoice, people of Zion! Shout for joy, you people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you! He comes triumphant and victorious, but humble and riding on a donkey – on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 The Lord says, “I will remove the war chariots from Israel and take the horses from Jerusalem; the bows used in battle will be destroyed. Your king will make peace among the nations; he will rule from sea to sea, from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.”

Hymn – When You Walk with the Lord (Trust and Obey)

Here the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to – Luke Chap: 19

28 After Jesus said this, he went on in front of them toward Jerusalem.

29 As he came near Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead

30 with these instructions: “Go to the village there ahead of you; as you go in, you will find a colt tied up that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

31 If someone asks you why you are untying it, tell him that the Master needs it.”

32 They went on their way and found everything just as Jesus had told them.

33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying it?”

34 “The Master needs it,” they answered,

35 and they took the colt to Jesus. Then they threw their cloaks over the animal and helped Jesus get on.

36 As he rode on, people spread their cloaks on the road.

37 When he came near Jerusalem, at the place where the road went down the Mount of Olives, the large crowd of his disciples began to thank God and praise him in loud voices for all the great things that they had seen:

38 “God bless the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory to God!”

39 Then some of the Pharisees in the crowd spoke to Jesus. “Teacher,” they said, “command your disciples to be quiet!”

40 Jesus answered, “I tell you that if they keep quiet, the stones themselves will start shouting.”

Hymn – O Lord My God! When I in Awesome Wonder

Hymn – Morning Has Broken

Collect for Palm Sunday

Almighty and everlasting God,

who in your tender love towards the human race

sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ

to take upon him our flesh

and to suffer death upon the cross:

grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility,

and also be made partakers of his resurrection;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever

Hymn – What a friend we have in Jesus,

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
    all our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    everything to God in prayer!
    O what peace we often forfeit,
    O what needless pain we bear,
    all because we do not carry
    everything to God in prayer!

  1. Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged;
    take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Can we find a friend so faithful
    who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness;
    take it to the Lord in prayer!

  1. Are we weak and heavy laden,
    cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Saviour, still our refuge–
    take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Do your friends despise, forsake you?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
    In his arms he’ll take and shield you;
    you will find a solace there.

Hymn – Be Still for the Presence of the Lord

We say the Creed

All – I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;

And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,

for ever and ever.
Amen.
