When I finish shopping I sit in the cafe which is just by the lifts and I see all those who are starting their shopping. It is amazing nowadays how everything goes in fashion. There are jeans, cut off trousers, trousers, shorts for men and women, dresses, mini, midi and maxi, and a few skirts. My youngest sister used to say, “I’d rather be dead than out of fashion.” She certainly lived up to this. When she saw “The Avengers” on T.V. she just had to have knee high leather boots. Her husband had to take her to London to be measured as they were not yet on general sale. They were very expensive but lasted her until she died.
As we travel to Bedworth each week and see nature unfolding, there is always lots of fly-tipping in Rabbit Lane. In my childhood we could earn a few pennies by taking empty ‘pop’ bottles back to the shop but then plastic came in and littering got worse. Drinks containers make up 43% in volume of the U.K.’s litter. The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) will be introduced in October 1927, 10 years after it was first proposed. This means you will have to pay a redeemable deposit (probably about 20p) which can be claimed back at collection points such as supermarkets and stores (no receipt or proof of purchase required) but in good condition. Perhaps today’s children will be able to make some extra pocket money.
There is a story about a naughty boy whose antics made his mother exclaim “How do you expect to get into heaven?” He looked thoughtful for a moment and then replied, “I shall just run in and out and keep slamming the door until they say, ‘For goodness sake, either come in or stay out,’ – and then I’ll go in.” I’m sure even St. Peter would have to smile at that!
