Welcome
Hymn – All People That On Earth Do Dwell
- All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.
Him serve with fear, His praise forth tll;
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
- The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
Without our aid He did us make;
We are His flock, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.
- O enter then His gates with praise;
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
- For why? The Lord our God is good;
His mercy is for ever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
- To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
The God whom Heaven and earth adore,
From men and from the angel host
Be praise and glory evermore. (by William Kethe, 1550)
The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night, and a perfect end.
All: Amen
Lord, you are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name. Do not forsake us. O Lord our God.
Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.
Let us reflect in silence on the day which is ending, recalling
our failures to love God and our neighbour
(Silence is kept)
Let us confess our sins to Almighty God.
The First Reading is from – John Chap: 17
20 “I pray not only for them, but also for those who believe in me because of their message.
21 I pray that they may all be one. Father! May they be in us, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me.
22 I gave them the same glory you gave me, so that they may be one, just as you and I are one:
23 I in them and you in me, so that they may be completely one, in order that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them as you love me.
Hymn is – Praise my soul the King of Heaven
- Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,
to his feet your tribute bring;
ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
who like you his praise should sing?
Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him!
praise the everlasting King.
- Praise him for his grace and favour
to our fathers in distress;
praise him, still the same as ever,
slow to blame and swift to bless;
Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him!
glorious in his faithfulness.
- Father-like, he tends and spares us,
Well our feeble frame he knows;
in his hands he gently bears us,
rescues us from all our foes:
Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him!
widely as his mercy flows.
- Angels, help us to adore him;
you behold him face to face;
sun and moon, bow down before him,
praise him all in time and space.
Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him!
praise with us the God of grace. (by Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847)
The Second Reading is from Revelation Chap: 7
All: Glory to you, O Lord.
9 After this I looked, and there was an enormous crowd – no one could count all the people! They were from every race, tribe, nation, and language, and they stood in front of the throne and of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.
10 They called out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb!”
11 All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures. Then they threw themselves face downward in front of the throne and worshiped God,
12 saying, “Amen! Praise, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honour, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever! Amen!”
13 One of the elders asked me, “Who are these people dressed in white robes, and where do they come from?”
14 “I don’t know, sir. You do,” I answered. He said to me, “These are the people who have come safely through the terrible persecution. They have washed their robes and made them white with the blood of the Lamb.
15 That is why they stand before God’s throne and serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will protect them with his presence.
16 Never again will they hunger or thirst; neither sun nor any scorching heat will burn them,
17 because the Lamb, who is in the centre of the throne, will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Preserve us, O Lord, while waking,
and guard us while sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ,
and asleep we may rest in peace.
All: Amen
Lord, have mercy on us Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
Prayers from the prayer jar
. We gather our thoughts and prayers in the words our Saviour gave us
All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
Confession
All: Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you,
through our own fault,
in thought and word and deed,
and in what we have left undone.
For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Absolution
The Almighty and most merciful God grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of all our sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
To you before the end of day, creator of the world, we pray: in love unfailing hear our prayer, enfold us in your watchful care.
Keep all disturbing dreams away, and hold the evil foe at bay. repose untroubled let us find for soul and body, heart and mind.
Almighty Father, this accord through Jesus Christ, your Son .our Lord: who reigns with you eternally in your blest Spirit’s unity.
Be with us, merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we, who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world may rest upon your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen
Hymn – The Day Thou Gravest Lord is Ended
- The day you gave us, Lord, is ended,
the darkness falls at your behest;
to you our morning hymns ascended,
your praise shall sanctify our rest. - We thank you that your church, unsleeping
while earth rolls onward into light,
through all the world her watch is keeping,
and rests not now by day or night. - As o’er each continent and island
the dawn leads on another day,
the voice of prayer is never silent,
nor dies the strain of praise away. - The sun, that bids us rest, is waking
our brethren beneath the western sky,
and hour by hour fresh lips are making
your wondrous doings heard on high. - So be it, Lord; your throne shall never,
like earth’s proud empires, pass away;
but stand and rule and grow forever,
’til all your creatures own your sway.
(by John Ellerton, 1870)
All: Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen
The almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us, this night and for evermore.
All: Amen
