Lent is a time for preparation, a time to reflect, renew, and ready ourselves for new beginnings. This year, it is particularly special for me as I will be licensed as Priest-in-Charge of the Ley Group of Churches on 12th March. This will mark a new chapter in our journey of faith, reminding us all of our call to share the light of Christ with others.
In the Orthodox Church, Easter starts in total darkness. At midnight, the priest steps out from behind the sanctuary screen with three candles and declares, “Christ is risen!” The congregation replies, “He is risen indeed!” One by one, people light their candles, passing the flame until the whole church glows. It’s a powerful image of Jesus breaking free from death and bringing light to the world.
So, how do we share His light? It starts with believing in Him, praying, reading His Word, and talking about our faith. If we don’t shine our light, there’s nothing to share! It also means looking after each other. Let’s support fellow Christians, put aside differences, and work together. A church that stands united is strong and ready for whatever God calls us to do.
We also need to be brave in sharing our faith. Not everyone will get it, but some might hear exactly what they need. Trust God and take the risk. Caring for others is something Ansley Church does so well—let’s keep using that gift to support those who are struggling. Pray for them, comfort them, and be a sign of God’s love. And let’s not forget generosity—not just for those close to us but for people far away who don’t have what we do. Our help can truly change lives.
And finally, don’t forget to find joy in your faith. Laughter can lift spirits and ease tough moments. Jesus lived, loved, forgave, and made space for everyone. Let’s follow His lead—love people, shine His light, and let the power of the resurrection be real in our lives and our community.
