Letter for November

Communication

Based on a sermon by S. Medley on 2 Timothy 3:14 to 4:15.

In his second letter to Timothy Paul encourages him to

“continue in the truths you were taught and firmly believe.  You knew who your teachers were and you remember that ever since you were a child you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are there to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

2 Timothy 3:14 to 15

We were reminded of the ways of communicating that have occurred over time; such as speaking and listening, reading and writing,  Morse code, radio and telephones.  More recently television, smart phones, emails and messaging have been developed.  You can probably think of others.

We were challenged to think about how God communicates to us and how we communicate to him.  How for example does he communicate to people we read about in the Bible?

We remembered that people heard his voice, for example Moses in Exodus and the boy Samuel in 1 Samuel.  We read that God also communicated through angels, who spoke to the shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem (Luke 2) and to Joseph betrothed to Mary (Matthew 1)  He also spoke to people in dreams. We all remembered Joseph of the coat of many colours (Genesis 40 and 41).

These people in the Bible recognised that what they heard was from God.- they listened and they acted on what they heard.

We listened to snippets of well known voices – Mohammed Ali, Tony Blair and Brian Blessed.  We recognise best the voices of those we know best – our families and friends.  The people we regularly spend time with.

We were given an invitation at the end of the talk – to tune in to God’s voice, to listen to Him, to speak to Him and to speak His truth to others.
