Marie’s September Article

We of a certain age can remember the Beano comic.  We couldn’t afford comics but other children would pass them on to us.  Do you remember Denis the menace and his dog Gnasher or The Bash Street Kids?  Well, the Beano was 85 years old in July 2023 and when a man was interviewed about this he said the Beano should be changed as it didn’t reflect people now.   Well, let’s face it, I say if it’s not broke why fix it?

As I continue my ‘clearing out’, I found my autograph book from 1951/2 when I was about to leave school. It was the practice in those days to get all the autographs of teachers and pupils in your year. I’d like to share with you a couple of verses some wrote, “True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like Autumn leaves, found everywhere.” “There’s music in a rainstorm, music in a gale.  There’s music in a Tom Cat when you tread upon it’s tail.”  But my favourite was, “Love is virtue, love is a passion. Love is a thing even Churchill can’t ration.”  This one reflects the times because rationing lasted for a long time after the end of the war.

As we see the many wild fires, floods and hurricanes, we realise we may have had a funny summer weather-wise but we have been spared the extremes suffered by many countries.  Also I have never seen our garden with such an abundance of flowers and amidst the perennials, I have been happy to see many wild flowers grow and even picked some for the house.   This has been rewarded as I have never seen so many Butterflies for years.

Autumn approaches, the nights draw in,                                                                                  Curtains closed early, making us cosy within.                                                                  The leaves  begin now to gently fall,                                                                                   Soon time to feed the birds, one and all.
