Hymn – All People That On Earth Do Dwell

  • All people that on earth do dwell,
    Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice.
    Him serve with fear, His praise forth tell;
    Come ye before Him and rejoice.
  • The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
    Without our aid He did us make;
    We are His flock, He doth us feed,
    And for His sheep He doth us take.
  • O enter then His gates with praise;
    Approach with joy His courts unto;
    Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
    For it is seemly so to do.
  • For why? The Lord our God is good;
    His mercy is for ever sure;
    His truth at all times firmly stood,
    And shall from age to age endure.
  • To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
    The God whom Heaven and earth adore,
    From men and from the angel host
    Be praise and glory evermore.
    (by William Kethe, 1550)
  • The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night, and a perfect end.Amen

    Lord, you are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name. Do not forsake us. O Lord our God.

    Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

    Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.

    Let us reflect in silence on the day which is ending, recalling our failures to love God and our neighbour(Silence is kept)

    Let us confess our sins to Almighty God.

    • Confession Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

      we have sinned against you,

      through our own fault,

      in thought and word and deed,

      and in what we have left undone.

      For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,

      forgive us all that is past;

      and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

      to the glory of your name. Amen.

      The Almighty and most merciful God grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of all our sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

      To you before the end of day,

      creator of the world, we pray:

      in love unfailing hear our prayer,

      enfold us in your watchful care.

      Keep all disturbing dreams away,

      and hold the evil foe at bay.

      repose untroubled let us find

      for soul and body, heart and mind.

      Almighty Father, this accord

      through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord:

      who reigns with you eternally

      in your blest Spirit’s unity.

    • The First Reading is from – Matthew Chap: 713 “Go in through the narrow gate, because the gate to hell is wide and the road that leads to it is easy, and there are many who travel it.

      14 But the gate to life is narrow and the way that leads to it is hard, and there are few people who find it.

    • Guide me, O my great Jehovah,
      pilgrim through this barren land;
      I am weak, but you are mighty;
      hold me with your powerful hand.
      Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
      feed me now and evermore,
      feed me now and evermore.
      • Open now the crystal fountain,
        where the healing waters flow.
        Let the fire and cloudy pillar
        lead me all my journey through.
        Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
        ever be my strength and shield,
        ever be my strength and shield.
      • When I tread the verge of Jordan,
        bid my anxious fears subside.
        Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
        land me safe on Canaan’s side.
        Songs of praises, songs of praises
        I will ever sing to you,
        I will ever sing to you.
         (by William Williams – 1717 to 1791)
    • The Second Reading is from John Chap: 141 “Do not be worried and upset,” Jesus told them. “Believe in God and believe also in me.

      2 There are many rooms in my Father’s house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so.

      3 And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am.

      4 You know the way that leads to the place where I am going.”

      5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way to get there?”

      6 Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.

      7 Now that you have known me,” he said to them, “you will know my Father also, and from now on you do know him and you have seen him.”

    • Preserve us, O Lord, while waking,and guard us while sleeping,

      that awake we may watch with Christ,

      and asleep we may rest in peace.

      Lord, have mercy on us

      Christ, have mercy on us.

      Lord, have mercy on us.

      Prayers from the prayer jar

      Lord’s Prayer

      Our Father, which art in heaven,

       Hallowed be thy Name.

      Thy Kingdom come.

      Thy will be done in earth,

      As it is in heaven.

      Give us this day our daily bread.

      And forgive us our trespasses,

      As we forgive them that trespass against us.

      And lead us not into temptation,

      But deliver us from evil.

      For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory,

      For ever and ever.

  • Be with us, merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we, who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world may rest upon your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen

    Hymn – The Day Thou Gavest Lord is Ended

    • The day you gave us, Lord, is ended,
      the darkness falls at your behest;
      to you our morning hymns ascended,
      your praise shall sanctify our rest.
    • We thank you that your church, unsleeping
      while earth rolls onward into light,
      through all the world her watch is keeping,
      and rests not now by day or night.
    • As o’er each continent and island
      the dawn leads on another day,
      the voice of prayer is never silent,
      nor dies the strain of praise away.
    • The sun, that bids us rest, is waking
      our brethren beneath the western sky,
      and hour by hour fresh lips are making
      your wondrous doings heard on high.
    • So be it, Lord; your throne shall never,
      like earth’s proud empires, pass away;
      but stand and rule and grow forever,
      ’til all your creatures own your sway.

    (by John Ellerton, 1870)

    Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord;

    and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;

    for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

    The almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us, this night and for evermore.
