Hymn –   One More Step Along The Road I Go

Preparation

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

Grace mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

All: And also with you.

This is the day that the Lord has made.

All:  Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

We have come together in the name of Christ to offer our praise and thanksgiving  to hear and receive God’s holy word, to pray for the needs of the world, and to seek the forgiveness of our sins, that by the power of the Holy Spirit, we may give ourselves to the service of God.

All: We say Sorry

Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.’

So let us turn away from our sins and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

All: Lord God, we have sinned against you;We have done evil in your sight.

We are sorry and repent.

Have mercy on us according to your love.

Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.

Renew a right spirit within us and restore to us the joy of your salvation;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins, and restore us in His image to the praise and glory of His name through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Blessed is the Lord,

All: For He has heard the voice of our prayer;

Therefore shall our hearts dance for joy

All: And in our song will we praise our God.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, creator and redeemer of all;

to you be glory and praise for ever.

From the waters of chaos you drew forth the world, and in your great love fashioned us in your image. Now, through the deep waters of death, you have brought your people to new birth by raising your Son to life in triumph.

May Christ your light ever dawn in our hearts as we offer you our sacrifice of thanks and praise.

Blessed be God, Father Son and Holy Spirit.

All: Blessed be God for ever.

Hymn – Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow

1 Through the night of doubt and sorrow
onward goes the pilgrim band,
singing songs of expectation,
marching to the promised land.

2 Clear before us through the darkness
gleams and burns the guiding light;
pilgrim clasps the hand of pilgrim,
stepping fearless through the night.

3 One the light of God’s own presence
o’er his ransomed people shed,
chasing far the gloom and terror,
brightening all the path we tread:

4 One the object of our journey,
one the faith which never tires,
one the earnest looking forward,
one the hope our God inspires:

5 One the strain that lips of thousands
lift as from the heart of one;
one the conflict, one the peril,
one the march in God begun:

6 One the gladness of rejoicing
on the far eternal shore,
where the one almighty Father
reigns in love for evermore.

7 Onward, therefore, Christian pilgrims,
onward with the cross our aid;
bear its shame, and fight its battle,
till we rest beneath its shade.
(by Bernhard Severin Ingemann (1789 to 1862) Translated by S. Baring-Gould – 1834 to 1924)

Collect for the Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

O God, you declare your almighty power

most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:

mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace,

that we, running the way of your commandments,

may receive your gracious promises,

and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen

Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead.

All: And Christ shall give you light.

You have died and your life is hid with Christ in God.

All: Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead.

Set your minds on things that are above,

not on things that are on the earth.

All: And Christ shall give you light.

When Christ our life appears

you will appear with him in glory.

All: Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.

Hymn – All the Way My Saviour Leads Me

  1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy,

Who through life has been my Guide?

Heavenly peace, divinest comfort,

Here by faith in Him to dwell!

For I know, whate’er befall me,

Jesus doeth all things well;

For I know, whate’er befall me,

Jesus doeth all things well.

  1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

Cheers each winding path I tread,

Gives me grace for every trial,

Feeds me with the living Bread.

Though my weary steps may falter

And my soul athirst may be,

Gushing from the Rock before me,

Lo! A spring of joy I see;

Gushing from the Rock before me,

Lo! A spring of joy I see.

  1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

Oh, the fullness of His love!

Perfect rest to me is promised

In my Father’s house above.

When my spirit, clothed immortal,

Wings its flight to realms of day

This my song through endless ages:

Jesus led me all the way;

This my song through endless ages:

Jesus led me all the way.                        (by Fanny Crosby – 1820 to 1915)

Our First Reading id taken from Hebrews Chap: 13

1 Keep on loving one another as Christians.

2 Remember to welcome strangers in your homes. There were some who did that and welcomed angels without knowing it.

3 Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. Remember those who are suffering, as though you were suffering as they are.

4 Marriage is to be honoured by all, and husbands and wives must be faithful to each other. God will judge those who are immoral and those who commit adultery.

5 Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”

6 Let us be bold, then, and say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?”

7 Remember your former leaders, who spoke God’s message to you. Think back on how they lived and died, and imitate their faith.

8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

15 Let us, then, always offer praise to God as our sacrifice through Jesus, which is the offering presented by lips that confess him as Lord.

16 Do not forget to do good and to help one another, because these are the sacrifices that please God.

This is the Word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Here the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to – Luke Chap: 14

7 Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them:

8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place. It could happen that someone more important than you has been invited,

9 and your host, who invited both of you, would have to come and say to you, “Let him have this place.’ Then you would be embarrassed and have to sit in the lowest place.

10 Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that your host will come to you and say, “Come on up, my friend, to a better place.’ This will bring you honor in the presence of all the other guests.

11 For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great.”

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbours – for they will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did.

13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind;

14 and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.”

This is the Word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Benedicte

Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel,

All: who has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour,

All: born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets God promised of old

All: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us,

To show mercy to our ancestors,

All: and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:

All: to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear,

All: holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,

All: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation

All: by the forgiveness of all their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

All: the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,

All: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.                    (Luke 1.68-79)

All: Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever.

Amen.

Sermon

Rev. James Martin spoke of the journey through life and for us to bring our needs to God. Always remembering to honour Him through our lives.

Amen

Time of Silence …..

We Say Together:

The Creed.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Prayers and Intercessions

In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father

Lord, we come to You and ask that You will lead us and that You will make our way plain as we progress through each stage of our lives, We think especially of those young people who will be changing school, going to university or starting in the world of work. We pray that they will know and trust that You will be with them helping and guide them.

Lord in your mercy.

All though live the gate we need to choose will be the narrow one, help us to resist the temptation to take the easy way out but put our trust in you, knowing that if we put our hand into your hand you will lead us to the breaking of the day.

Lord in your mercy.

We pray for the church around the world thinking not only of the apostles and pilgrims of old but also of those who go out into the often, hostile world preparing a way to bring the Good News of your love. At this time, we pray that we will soon have someone to lead us as we endeavour to reach out to those in our own community.

Lord in your mercy.

Heavenly Father we ask that you look, with mercy on your troubled world. History seems to continually repeat itself, Your Son Jesus fled as a refugee to Egypt. The Israelites were taken hostage to Babylon. There is war and famine, civil unrest, despotic leaders, and economic uncertainty that drive people from their homeland. Lord, look with pity on our troubled world, so that in due time many will be able to return rejoicing to their homeland.

Lord in your mercy

We think of all who are suffering in illness or bereavement at this time may they know that in their hour of need that you will carry them through their trouble.

We read some of the prayers from the

Prayer Jar

And in the silence we bring our own personal prayers.

Lord Jesus, you carried your Cross to Calvery, we ask that you be with those nearing the end of their lives and with those who are caring for them. Hear us as we remember those who have died in the faith of Christ. We commit them to your care and that in Heaven they and we (in due time) will take our place.

Lord in your mercy

Lord God be with us all as we journey thorough this life

We offer you O Lord our thanks for this festival the guidance you have given to so many, for the joy and fellowship it gives to both those doing the work and those who visit each year, and we pray that the message of Your love will be shown to all around.

Lord in your mercy

Father of all, as we journey through life, be our guide, our comforter and our provider and help us to help in any way we can all those who need help of whatever colour, creed or religion. So, as the song says- “If we can help somebody as we go along, then our living will not be  in vain.”

Lord in your mercy.

Merciful Father

Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Heavenly Father, you have promised through your Son Jesus Christ, that when we meet in his name, and pray according to his mind, he will be among us and hear our prayer; in your love and mercy fulfil our desires, and give us your greatest gift, which is to know you, the only true God, and your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

We gather our thoughts and prayers in the words our Saviour gave us

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Closing Blessings

May God give to you and to all those you love

his comfort and his peace,

his light and his joy,

in this world and the next;

and the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ

and the Love of God

and the fellowship  of the Holy Sprit

be with us all evermore.

All: Amen.

Hymn – Guide me, O my great Jehovah

  • Guide me, O my great Jehovah,
    pilgrim through this barren land;
    I am weak, but you are mighty;
    hold me with your powerful hand.
    Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
    feed me now and evermore,
    feed me now and evermore.

  • Open now the crystal fountain,
    where the healing waters flow.
    Let the fire and cloudy pillar
    lead me all my journey through.
    Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
    ever be my strength and shield,
    ever be my strength and shield.

  • When I tread the verge of Jordan,
    bid my anxious fears subside.
    Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
    land me safe on Canaan’s side.
    Songs of praises, songs of praises
    I will ever sing to you,
    I will ever sing to you.
     (by William Williams – 1717 to 1791)
