2nd Sunday before Advent

 Hymn – Thou, Whose Almighty Word

  1. Lord, your almighty Word
    Chaos and darkness heard,
    And took their flight;
    Hear us, we humbly pray,
    And where the gospel day
    Sheds not its glorious ray,
    Let there be light!

  1. Saviour, you came to give
    Those who in darkness live
    Healing and sight,
    Health to the sick in mind,
    Sight to the inly blind,
    Now to all humankind
    Let there be light!

  1. Spirit of truth and love,
    Life giving, holy dove,
    Speed forth your flight!
    Move on the water’s face
    Bearing the lamp of grace,
    And in earth’s darkest place
    Let there be light!

  1. Holy and blessed three,
    Glorious Trinity,
    Wisdom, love, might;
    Boundless as ocean’s tide,
    Rolling in fullest pride,
    Through the world far and wide,
    Let there be light!              (by John Marriott, 1813)

joy-givingr peace-giving presence,

That we may praise you now with our lips,

and all the day long with our lives

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Cast your burden upon the Lord

All: And he will sustain you

Create in us clean hearts, O God

All: And renew a right spirit within us

Cast us not away from your Presence

All: And take not your Holy Spirit from us

Give us the joy of your saving help

All: And sustain us with your life-giving Spirit

Blessed be the Lord day by day

All: The God of our salvation, who bears our burdens.

We have a moment of quiet, to call to mind the things we

Have thought, said and done which we know grieve the God

who loves us

 Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

All: Almighty God

Long-suffering and of great goodness

I confess to you.

I confess with my whole heart

My neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments

My wrong doing, thinking and speaking:

The hurts I have done to others,

And the good I have left undone.

O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;

And raise me to newness of life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the God of love and power

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,

And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

We praise God for his love and forgiveness with:-

Hymn – Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

Our First Reading is from – – Ephesians Chap: 5

8 You yourselves used to be in the darkness, but since you have become the Lord’s people, you are in the light. So you must live like people who belong to the light,

9 for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth.

10 Try to learn what pleases the Lord.

11 Have nothing to do with the worthless things that people do, things that belong to the darkness. Instead, bring them out to the light

12 (It is really too shameful even to talk about the things they do in secret.)

13 And when all things are brought out to the light, then their true nature is clearly revealed;

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Our Second Reading is From – Luke Chap: 22

25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the pagans have power over their people, and the rulers claim the title “Friends of the People.’

26 But this is not the way it is with you; rather, the greatest one among you must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Sermon Notes for the Second Sunday before Advent

The theme for the day is Light’

God made the world but man would not listen to him.

Noah and Moses both tried to bring people to the right way to live,

In the end God sent Jesus the ‘Light of the world’

The Jews were expecting a different sort of Masiah.

Jesus came to bring peace.

People especially the young and old are afraid of the dark.

We are in a dark world at the moment and we need to pray and ask God for light

Look for the Light and tell others about that Light.

Amen

Hymn – Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

  1. in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
    most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
    Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

  1. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
    nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
    Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
    Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

  1. To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small,
    in all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
    we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
    and wither and perish, but naught changeth Thee.

  1. Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
    Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
    all praise we would render, O help us to see
    ’tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

  1. Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
    in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
    most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
    Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.
      (by Walter C Smith  – 1824 to 1908)

On earth as in heaven.

Forgive us our sins

As we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

But deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, ‘

Now and for ever.

Amen.

Closing Prayer

May God give to you and to all those you love

his comfort and his peace,

his light and his joy,

in this world and the next;

and the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ

and the Love of God

and the fellowship  of the Holy Spirit

be with us all evermore.

Hymn – What a friend we have in Jesus,

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
    all our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    everything to God in prayer!
    O what peace we often forfeit,
    O what needless pain we bear,
    all because we do not carry
    everything to God in prayer!

  1. Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged;
    take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Can we find a friend so faithful
    who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness;
    take it to the Lord in prayer!

  1. Are we weak and heavy laden,
    cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Saviour, still our refuge–
    take it to the Lord in prayer!
    Do your friends despise, forsake you?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
    In his arms he’ll take and shield you;
    you will find a solace there.
    (by Joseph Medlicott Scriven – 1819 to 1886)

The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil

And keep us in eternal life.

All: Amen
