Trinity 19 Sunday 15th October

Hymn – Lead Us Heavenly Father Lead Us

  1. Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
    o’er the world’s tempestuous sea;
    guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,
    for we have no help but thee;
    yet possessing every blessing,
    if our God our Father be.

  1. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us:
    all our weakness thou dost know;
    thou didst tread this earth before us,
    thou didst feel its keenest woe;
    lone and dreary, faint and weary,
    through the desert thou didst go.

  1. Spirit of our God, descending,
    fill our hearts with heavenly joy,
    love with every passion blending,
    pleasure that can never cloy:
    thus provided, pardoned, guided,
    nothing can our peace destroy.

My wrong doing, thinking and speaking:

The hurts I have done to others,

And the good I have left undone.

O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;

And raise me to newness of life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the God of love and power

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,

And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

Hymn – All the Way My Saviour Leads Me

  1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt His tender mercy,

Who through life has been my Guide?

Heavenly peace, divinest comfort,

Here by faith in Him to dwell!

For I know, whate’er befall me,

Jesus doeth all things well;

For I know, whate’er befall me,

Jesus doeth all things well.

  1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

Cheers each winding path I tread,

Gives me grace for every trial,

Feeds me with the living Bread.

Though my weary steps may falter

And my soul athirst may be,

Gushing from the Rock before me,

Lo! A spring of joy I see;

Gushing from the Rock before me,

Lo! A spring of joy I see.

  1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

Oh, the fullness of His love!

Perfect rest to me is promised

In my Father’s house above.

When my spirit, clothed immortal,

Wings its flight to realms of day

This my song through endless ages:

Jesus led me all the way;

This my song through endless ages:

Jesus led me all the way.   (by Fanny Crosby)

Our First Reading is from – Exodus Chap: 32

1 When the people saw that Moses had not come down from the mountain but was staying there a long time, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “We do not know what has happened to this man Moses, who led us out of Egypt; so make us a god to lead us.”

2 Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold earrings which your wives, your sons, and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.”

3 So all the people took off their gold earrings and brought them to Aaron.

4 He took the earrings, melted them, poured the gold into a mold, and made a gold bull-calf. The people said, “Israel, this is our god, who led us out of Egypt!”

5 Then Aaron built an altar in front of the gold bull-calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to honor the Lord.”

6 Early the next morning they brought some animals to burn as sacrifices and others to eat as fellowship offerings. The people sat down to a feast, which turned into an orgy of drinking and sex.

7 The Lord said to Moses, “Hurry and go back down, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have sinned and rejected me.

8 They have already left the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made a bull-calf out of melted gold and have worshiped it and offered sacrifices to it. They are saying that this is their god, who led them out of Egypt.

9 I know how stubborn these people are.

10 Now, don’t try to stop me. I am angry with them, and I am going to destroy them. Then I will make you and your descendants into a great nation.”

11 But Moses pleaded with the Lord his God and said, “Lord, why should you be so angry with your people, whom you rescued from Egypt with great might and power?

12 Why should the Egyptians be able to say that you led your people out of Egypt, planning to kill them in the mountains and destroy them completely? Stop being angry; change your mind and do not bring this disaster on your people.

13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remember the solemn promise you made to them to give them as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and to give their descendants all that land you promised would be their possession forever.”

14 So the Lord changed his mind and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Our Second Reading is From – Matthew Chap: 22

1 Jesus again used parables in talking to the people.

2 “The Kingdom of heaven is like this. Once there was a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son.

3 He sent his servants to tell the invited guests to come to the feast, but they did not want to come.

4 So he sent other servants with this message for the guests: “My feast is ready now; my steers and prize calves have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast!’

5 But the invited guests paid no attention and went about their business: one went to his farm, another to his store,

6 while others grabbed the servants, beat them, and killed them.

7 The king was very angry; so he sent his soldiers, who killed those murderers and burned down their city.

8 Then he called his servants and said to them, “My wedding feast is ready, but the people I invited did not deserve it.

9 Now go to the main streets and invite to the feast as many people as you find.’

10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, good and bad alike; and the wedding hall was filled with people.

11 “The king went in to look at the guests and saw a man who was not wearing wedding clothes.

12 “Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ the king asked him. But the man said nothing.

13 Then the king told the servants, “Tie him up hand and foot, and throw him outside in the dark. There he will cry and gnash his teeth.’ “

14 And Jesus concluded, “Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Sermon

Two strange and difficult readings . In the first the children of Israel turn away from God while Moses is away speaking to God and make a Golden calf.

God is angry, but Moses intervenes and invites God to forgive.

The second parable again the invitations are sent out and then again when the feast was ready, but the invitations were ignored and even the servants killed.

The one who attended without the right clothes was put outside. The common link is “Invitation”

The invitation is from God, He invites us to come and worship and we are to invite other.

One day we will be invited to the Eternal Home- It is always open.

Amen

Hymn – Thy Hand O God Has Guided

  1. Thy hand, O God, has guided
    thy flock, from age to age;
    the wondrous tale is written,
    full clear on every page;
    our fathers owned thy goodness,
    and we their deeds record;
    and both of this bear witness:
    one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

  1. Thy heralds brought glad tidings
    to greatest as to least;
    they bade men rise and hasten
    to share the great King’s feast;
    and this was all their teaching
    in every deed and word;
    to all alike proclaiming:
    one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

  1. Through many a day of darkness,
    through many a scene of strife,
    the faithful few fought bravely
    to guard the nation’s life.
    Their gospel of redemption,
    sin pardoned, man restored,
    was all in this enfolded:
    one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

  1. Thy mercy will not fail us,
    nor leave thy work undone;
    with thy right hand to help us,
    the victory shall be won;
    and then, by men and angels,
    thy name shall be adored,
    and this shall be their anthem:
    One Church, one Faith, one Lord.

Hymn – Guide me, O my great Jehovah

  1. Guide me, O my great Jehovah,
    pilgrim through this barren land;
    I am weak, but you are mighty;
    hold me with your powerful hand.
    Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
    feed me now and evermore,
    feed me now and evermore.

  1. Open now the crystal fountain,
    where the healing waters flow.
    Let the fire and cloudy pillar
    lead me all my journey through.
    Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
    ever be my strength and shield,
    ever be my strength and shield.

  1. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
    bid my anxious fears subside.
    Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
    land me safe on Canaan’s side.
    Songs of praises, songs of praises
    I will ever sing to you,
    I will ever sing to you.
