Sunday 8th May Easter 4

Sunday Morning Prayer – Forth Sunday of Easter – St. Laurence’s Church, Church End Ansley – 8th May 2022

Before we start today’s service, there are two messages we would like you to read and pray about.

Firstly Bishop Christopher writes:

“I write to you from the Houses of Parliament. I have been here all week. The Ukrainian Crisis has been a constant theme. Each day I’ve led prayers in the House of Lords, with the persistent threat of war in Europe lending them great urgency and poignancy.

As the week has unfolded, our worst fears have been realised and the people of Ukraine are now suffering a terrible onslaught. One of the lines from the ancient psalm I used this morning says, ‘I sought the Lord, and he heard me: yea he delivered me out of all my fears’.

So, this is the time to increase our prayer and to seek the Lord, that God’s ways of peace would prevail and break through the violence. I call on all people of prayer across Coventry and Warwickshire to join the wave of prayer that is rising in the world.”

Preparation

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind.

Grace mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

All: And also with you.

This is the day that the Lord has made.

All:  Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

We have come together in the name of Christ to offer our praise and thanksgiving  to hear and receive God’s holy word, to pray for the needs of the world, and to seek the forgiveness of our sins, that by the power of the Holy Spirit, we may give ourselves to the service of God.

 We say Sorry

Jesus says, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand.’

So let us turn away from our sins and turn to Christ, confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

All: Lord God, we have sinned against you;

We have done evil in your sight.

We are sorry and repent.

Have mercy on us according to your love.

Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.

Renew a right spirit within us and restore to us the joy of your salvation;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the Father of all mercies cleanse us from our sins, and restore us in His image to the praise and glory of His name through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Blessed is the Lord,

All: For He has heard the voice of our prayer;

Therefore shall our hearts dance for joy

All: And in our song will we praise our God.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, creator and redeemer of all;

to you be glory and praise for ever.

From the waters of chaos you drew forth the world, and in your great love fashioned us in your image. Now, through the deep waters of death, you have brought your people to new birth by raising your Son to life in triumph.

May Christ your light ever dawn in our hearts as we offer you our sacrifice of thanks and praise.

Blessed be God, Father Son and Holy Spirit.

All: Blessed be God for ever.

Collect for the Forth Sunday After Easter – 8th May 2022

Almighty God,

whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life:

raise us, who trust in him,

from the death of sin to the life of righteousness,

that we may seek those things which are above,

where he reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen

Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead.

All: And Christ shall give you light.

You have died and your life is hid with Christ in God.

All: Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead.

Set your minds on things that are above,

not on things that are on the earth.

All: And Christ shall give you light.

When Christ our life appears

you will appear with him in glory.

All: Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.

Hymn – Blessed Assurance Jesus is Mine

  1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.

  1. Perfect communion, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight.
    Angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love. [Refrain]

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.

  1. Perfect submission, all is at rest.
I in my Saviour am happy and blessed,
    watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love. [Refrain]

Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Saviour all the day long.

Our First Reading id taken from Genesis Chap: 26

18 He dug once again the wells which had been dug during the time of Abraham and which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham’s death. Isaac gave the wells the same names that his father had given them.

19 Isaac’s servants dug a well in the valley and found water.

20 The shepherds of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s shepherds and said, “This water belongs to us.” So Isaac named the well “Quarrel.”

21 Isaac’s servants dug another well, and there was a quarrel about that one also, so he named it “Enmity.”

22 He moved away from there and dug another well. There was no dispute about this one, so he named it “Freedom.” He said, “Now the Lord has given us freedom to live in the land, and we will be prosperous here.”

23 Isaac left and went to Beersheba.

24 That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid; I am with you. I will bless you and give you many descendants because of my promise to my servant Abraham.”

25 Isaac built an altar there and worshiped the Lord. Then he set up his camp there, and his servants dug another well.

This is the Word of the Lord

All:  Thanks be to God

Here the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to – John Chap: 4 and Luke Chap: 6

John Chap: 4

14 but those who drink the water that I will give them will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give them will become in them a spring which will provide them with life-giving water and give them eternal life.”

Luke Chap: 6

38 Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands – all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.”

This is the Word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Benediction

Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel,

All: who has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour,

All: born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets God promised of old

All: to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us,

To show mercy to our ancestors,

All: and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:

All: to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear,

All: holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,

All: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation

All: by the forgiveness of all their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

All: the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,

All: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.                        (Luke 1.68-79)

All: Glory to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning is now

and shall be for ever.

Amen.

Sermon for 3rd Sunday of Easter   – 18th May 2022

(Genesis Chap: 26 Vers: 18 to 25)

How can we dig wells into God, so that we can flourish and bear much fruit in our land! Maybe there is a song and a cry in some of your hearts for the well of God to spring up in your life or right here in Saint Laurence’s Church

Let’s delve a little deeper into Christ’s living water

Our reading from Genesis is showing us that Isaac respected his father Abraham, he showed this by not renaming the wells, but even more importantly; its telling us that even though the Philistines seem to have forgotten their obligations to the covenant that they had made with Abraham, Isaac hasn’t forgotten them.

By his calling the wells by their original names, he’s reminding them that they made a deal with his father Abraham and they keep it.

Looking at Vers:18 to 21.

Isaac digs some new well’s, but as we have just heard, the herdsmen of Gerar show up and say, ‘Hey’ that water is ours!!

If you think about it -that water has been there for a long time and at any point in time, these herdsmen could have gone and dug it up for themselves but they chose not to, and it wasn’t until Isaac actually puts in all the effort and digs the well, that these guys show up and think they are entitled to it.

I wonder how some of would react if we had worked hard for something only to have it taken away at the pivotal moment.

But you notice, Isaac is the better man here.

He moves further away and digs another well.

The herdsman were clearly the ones in the wrong, but Isaac realises that it’s not worth fighting over and killing people for, and so he moves away.

Ver: 22 tells us, that he found a place where there was plenty of room where he could live in peace. But it’s interesting that he credits the Lord with this.

He could quite easily of said,

I’m glad I decided to move because just look at the place I have managed to find”

But he didn’t instead he gives the glory to God.

If only our world was a little more like Isaac.

So what we are seeing here that Isaac is continuing to grow in his faith.

  • He is trusting in God to work all this out.
  • He doesn’t take up arms to fight these guys.
  • He doesn’t claim his rights of the covenant that Abraham had made.
  • He just seeks to be at peace, and seeks to be pleasing to God, and trusts that God will work things out for the

In Vers: 23 to 25 we see God reiterates His promises to Isaac.

God knows what Isaac’s been going through, and right in the middle of all his struggles, God comes and encourages Isaac by telling him the covenant promises once again.

There are fewer more comforting thoughts than when we are struggling, than to know God’s promises to us and to all who belong to Him, so when we find ourselves struggling let us reach out to God and ask Him to help us not be afraid, I know that’s not easy sometimes.

There an old saying which I’m sure many of you have heard, The person who fears God, need fear nothing else.

Water is used to describe the resource of God, the outpouring of his blessings, the outpouring of his Spirit his Holy Spirit!

It is used as an image of purity, as a sign of refreshing, an example of how the outpouring of God brings fruit into our hearts and lives.

We know Jesus used water in his illustrations, feel we need to share that life giving water of Christ with others.

Jesus healed people using water as part of the miracle.

Jesus spoke about His ‘Living Water’ that would never run dry.

He said that “those who drank it would never thirst again’.

What does it mean to never thirst again?

Christ is our well of resource?

If we are not drawing from the well of Christ then we are running on empty.

We know a car wouldn’t run on empty and neither can we, the depth of our need can be found by having faith and trust and reaching out to Christ.

He is the resource and He is always enough.

Are we running over with the blessings of God ?

How much are we using His ‘water of life’ and how much are we sharing it with others?

There are many in our world who have a great spiritual thirst.

Many who are searching, often intensely for a source of refreshment that will quench their yearning for meaning and direction in their lives!

They crave a cool, satisfying drink of insight and knowledge that will sooth their parched souls.

Their spirits cry out for life, sustaining experience of peace and calm to nourish and enliven their withering hearts.

We can only serve the Lord and share with others if we are nourished by His life giving water, we can’t feed others if we don’t first feed ourselves.

Amen

Time of Silence …..

We Say Together:

The Creed.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

We ask you to bring reconciliation and wholeness

where there is division, sickness and sorrow.

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the gifts of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to equip us for the work which you have given us.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the fruit of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to reveal in our lives the love of Jesus.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the breath of your Holy Spirit,

given us by the risen Lord.

We ask you to keep the whole Church, living and departed,

in the joy of eternal life.

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

All: Generous God,

hear our prayer,

and make us one in heart and mind

to serve you with joy for ever.

Amen.

We gather our thoughts and prayers in the words our Saviour gave us

All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Hymn is –How Great Thou Art

  • O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Chorus: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

  • When through the woods and forest glades I wander

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees

When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze

Chorus: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

  • And when I think of God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin

Chorus: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

  • When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow with humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art

Chorus: Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art,

how great Thou art           (by Stuart Hine, 1949)
