Pentecost Sunday 19th May

Hymn – Come Down, O Love Devine

  1. Come down, O Love divine!
    seek out this soul of mine
    and visit it with your own ardour glowing;
    O Comforter, draw near,
    within my heart appear,
    and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing.
  1. There let it freely burn
    till earthly passions turn
    to dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
    and let your glorious light
    shine ever on my sight,
    and make my pathway clear, by your illuming.
  1. Let holy charity
    my outward vesture be,
    and lowliness become my inner clothing;
    true lowliness of heart
    which takes the humbler part,
  2. and for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong

With which the soul will long
shall far surpass the power of human telling;
for none can guess its grace
till we become the place
in which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling
.(by Richard F Littledale – 1833 to 1890)

And the good I have left undone.

O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;

And raise me to newness of life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

May the God of love and power

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,

And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

We praise God for his love and forgiveness with:-

Hymn – Amazing Grace

  1. Amazing grace how sweet the sound
    that saved a wretch like me!
  2. I once was lost, but now am found,
    was blind, but now I see.
  1. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
    and grace my fears relieved;
    how precious did that grace appear
    the hour I first believed!
  1. Through many dangers, toils and snares
    I have already come:
    ’tis grace has brought me safe thus fr,
    and grace will lead me home.
  1. The Lord has promised good to me,
    his word my hope secures;
    he will my shield and portion be
    as long as life endures.
  1. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
    and mortal life shall cease:
    I shall possess, within the veil,
    a life of joy and peace.
  1. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
    the sun forbear to shine;
    but God, who called me here below,
    will be forever mine.
    (by John Newton, 1779)

Our First Reading is from – Acts Chap: 2

1 When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together in one place.

2 Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind blowing, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and touched each person there.

4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.

5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, religious people who had come from every country in the world.

6 When they heard this noise, a large crowd gathered. They were all excited, because all of them heard the believers talking in their own languages.

7 In amazement and wonder they exclaimed, “These people who are talking like this are Galileans!

8 How is it, then, that all of us hear them speaking in our own native languages?

9 We are from Parthia, Media, and Elam; from Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia; from Pontus and Asia,

10 from Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene. Some of us are from Rome,

11 both Jews and Gentiles converted to Judaism, and some of us are from Crete and Arabia – yet all of us hear them speaking in our own languages about the great things that God has done!”

12 Amazed and confused, they kept asking each other, “What does this mean?”

13 But others made fun of the believers, saying, “These people are drunk!”

14 Then Peter stood up with the other eleven apostles and in a loud voice began to speak to the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, listen to me and let me tell you what this means.

15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose; it is only nine o’clock in the morning.

16 Instead, this is what the prophet Joel spoke about:

17 “This is what I will do in the last days, God says: I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams.

18 Yes, even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will proclaim my message.

19 I will perform miracles in the sky above and wonders on the earth below. There will be blood, fire, and thick smoke;

20 the sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn red as blood, before the great and glorious Day of the Lord comes.

21 And then, whoever calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.’

This is the word of the God

All: Praise to you to Christ

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ According to – John Chaps: 15 and 16

Chap 15

26 “The Helper will come – the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God and who comes from the Father. I will send him to you from the Father, and he will speak about me.

27 And you, too, will speak about me, because you have been with me from the very beginning.

Chap: 16

4 But I have told you this, so that when the time comes for them to do these things, you will remember what I told you. “I did not tell you these things at the beginning, for I was with you.

5 But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where I am going.

6 And now that I have told you, your hearts are full of sadness.

7 But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send him to you.

8 And when he comes, he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God’s judgment.

9 They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me;

10 they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more;

11 and they are wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

12 “I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear.

13 When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come.

14 He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you.

15 All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Sermon notes for Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost in former days this weekend was known as Whit Sunday and the Monday after was the Bank Holiday.

Things have changed.

The bewildered disciples were doing as they had been told and waited in Jerusalem.

How frightened they must have been when this sudden wind with flames arrived.

They must have been terrified.

But they received the helper.

This Spirit.

It was wonderful Jesus had kept his promise.

God gives us His Spirit though Jesus.

We need to Celebrate and thank Him.

Hymn – Thou, Whose Almighty Word

  1. Lord, your almighty Word
    Chaos and darkness heard,
    And took their flight;
    Hear us, we humbly pray,
    And where the gospel day
    Sheds not its glorious ray,
    Let there be light!
  1. Saviour, you came to give
    Those who in darkness live
    Healing and sight,
    Health to the sick in mind,
    Sight to the inly blind,
    Now to all humankind
    Let there be light!
  1. Spirit of truth and love,
    Life giving, holy dove,
    Speed forth your flight!
    Move on the water’s face
    Bearing the lamp of grace,
    And in earth’s darkest place
    Let there be light!
  1. Holy and blessed three,
    Glorious Trinity,
    Wisdom, love, might;
    Boundless as ocean’s tide,
    Rolling in fullest pride,
    Through the world far and wide,
    Let there be light!              (by John Marriott, 1813)

Now and for ever.

Hymn – There is a Redeemer

Closing Prayer

Praise God who loves us.
All Praise God who cares.
May God, who gave birth to all creation, bless you:
may God, who became incarnate by an earthly mother, bless you:
may God, who broods as a mother over her children, bless you.
May almighty God bless you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
now and for ever

All: Amen.

Hymn To God Be the Glory

  1. To God be the glory, great things He has done;
    So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
    Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
    And opened the life gate that all may go in.

    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the earth hear His voice!
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the people rejoice!
    O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
    And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
  1. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
    To every believer the promise of God;
    The vilest offender who truly believes,
    That moment from Jesus a pardon receives
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the earth hear His voice!
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the people rejoice!
    O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
    And give Him the glory, great things He has done
  1. Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
    And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
    But purer, and higher, and greater will be
    Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the earth hear His voice!
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the people rejoice!
    O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
    And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
    (by Fanny J Crosby – 1820 to 1915)

The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil

And keep us in eternal life.

All: Amen
