Christ the King 21.11.21 Service

21 Nov 21

 Hymn  At the Name of Jesus

1)    At the name of Jesus
every knee shall bow,
every tongue confess him
King of Glory now.
'Tis the Father's pleasure
we should call him Lord,
who from the beginning
was the mighty Word:

2)    Mighty and mysterious
in the highest height,
God from everlasting
very light of light:
in the Father's bosom
with the Spirit blest,1
love, in love eternal,
rest, in perfect rest.

3)    Humbled for a season,
to receive a name
from the lips of sinners
unto whom he came,
faithfully he bore it
spotless to the last,
brought it back victorious
when from death he passed

4)    Bore it up triumphant
with its human light,
through all ranks of creatures
to the central height,
to the throne of Godhead,
to the Father's breast;
filled it with the glory
of that perfect rest.

5)    In your hearts enthrone him;
there let him subdue
all that is not holy,
all that is not true:
crown him as your captain
in temptation's hour;
let his will enfold you
in its light and power

6)    Brothers, this Lord Jesus5
shall return again,
with his Father's glory,
with his angel train;
for all wreaths of empire
meet upon his brow,
and our hearts confess him
King of Glory now.   ( by Caroline Maria Noel – 1817 to 1877)

Grace, mercy and peace from Cod our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

All: And also with you

Loving Lord,

Fill us with your life-giving,

joy-givingr peace-giving presence,

That we may praise you now with our lips,

and all the day long with our lives

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Cast your burden upon the Lord

All: And he will sustain you

Create in us clean hearts, O God

All: And renew a right spirit within us

Cast us not away from your Presence

All: And take not your Holy Spirit from us

Give us the joy of your saving help

All: And sustain us with your life-giving Spirit

Blessed be the Lord day by day

All: The God of our salvation, who bears our burdens.

We have a moment of quiet, to call to mind the things we

Have thought, said and done which we know grieve the God

who loves us

Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

All: Almighty God

Long-suffering and of great goodness

I confess to you.

I confess with my whole heart

My neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments

My wrong doing, thinking and speaking:

The hurts I have done to others,

And the good I have left undone.

O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;

And raise me to newness of life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

May the God of love and power

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,

And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

We praise God for his love and forgiveness with:-

 Hymn  - Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

1) Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
forgive our foolish ways;
reclothe us in our rightful mind,
in purer lives thy service find,
in deeper reverence, praise.

2) In simple trust like theirs who heard
beside the Syrian sea
the gracious calling of the Lord,
let us, like them, without a word
rise up and follow thee.

3) O Sabbath rest by Galilee,
O calm of hills above,
where Jesus knelt to share with thee
the silence of eternity,
interpreted by love!

4) Drop thy still dews of quietness,
till all our strivings cease;
take from our souls the strain and stress,
and let our ordered lives confess
the beauty of thy peace.

5) Breathe through the heats of our desire
thy coolness and thy balm;
let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still, small voice of calm!
( by John Greenleaf Whittier - 1872

 Reading Hebrews Chap: 10

11)  Every Jewish priest performs his services every day and offers the same sacrifices many times; but these sacrifices can never take away sins.

12)  Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins, an offering that is effective forever, and then he sat down at the right side of God.

13)  There he now waits until God puts his enemies as a footstool under his feet.

14) With one sacrifice, then, he has made perfect forever those who are purified from sin.

19)  We have, then, my friends, complete freedom to go into the Most Holy Place by means of the death of Jesus.

20)  He opened for us a new way, a living way, through the curtain - that is, through his own body.

21) We have a great priest in charge of the house of God.

22)  So let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, with hearts that have been purified from a guilty conscience and with bodies washed with clean water.

23) Let us hold on firmly to the hope we profess, because we can trust God to keep his promise.

24)  Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good.

25)  Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.

This is the word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Sermon Reflections – St. John’s –

The sermon spoke to how Christ as King did not exert His power on earth His Kingdom is in another place.

F.W. de Klerk, who died this week, when he came to power in South Africa he abolished apartheid and shared his Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela. He used his power to bring good.

We too know there is a place in Christ’s Kingdom and by prayer we can try and be good.

Do our best to help.

The power of Prayer is great, but it can take time for it to be answered.

Let us declare our faith in God.

All: We believe in God the Father,

From whom every family

In heaven and on earth is named.

We believe in God the Son

Who lives in our hearts through faith,

And fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit

Who strengthens us

With power from on high.

We believe in one God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Prayers and Intercessions

We pray for God to fill us with his Spirit.

Generous God,

we thank you for the power of your Holy Spirit.

We ask that we may be strengthened to serve you better.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the wisdom of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to make us wise to understand your will.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the peace of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to keep us confident of your love wherever you call us.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the healing of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to bring reconciliation and wholeness

where there is division, sickness and sorrow.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the gifts of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to equip us for the work which you have given us.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the fruit of your Holy Spirit.

We ask you to reveal in our lives the love of Jesus.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

We thank you for the breath of your Holy Spirit,

given us by the risen Lord.

We ask you to keep the whole Church, living and departed,

in the joy of eternal life.

Lord, come to bless us

All: and fill us with your Spirit.

All: Generous God,

hear our prayer,

and make us one in heart and mind

to serve you with joy for ever.

We gather our thoughts and prayers in the words our Saviour gave us

All: Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed by your name,

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

On earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread,

Forgive us our sins

As we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

But deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, '

Now and for ever.

December Jottings

Ansley Jottings: Christmas 2021 I am sure we all remember what a strange Christmas it was last year.   Restrictions shaped the way we lived and communicated with others.  Like many I was thrust into learning how to join Zoom meetings, making all the common errors on my first attempts – searching for the controls, not knowing ...
