Hymn – I Watch the Sun Rise

  1. I watch the sunrise
    Shine through the clouds
    Warming the earth below
    And at the midday –life seems to say
    I feel your brightness near me

  1. I watch the sunset fading away,
    lighting the clouds with sleep.
    And as the evening closes its eyes,
    I feel your presence near me.

  1. I watch the sunset fading away,
    lighting the clouds with sleep.
    And as the evening closes its eyes,
    I feel your presence near me.

  1. I watch the moonlight guarding the night,
    waiting till morning comes.
    The air is silent earth is at rest –
    only your peace is near me. yes, you are always near me.

  1. For you are always close to me
    following all my ways.
    May I be always close to you,
    following all your ways Lord.

Give us the joy of your saving help

All: And sustain us with your life-giving Spirit

Blessed be the Lord day by day

We have a moment of quiet, to call to mind the things we

Have thought, said and done which we know grieve the God

who loves us

Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

All: Almighty God

Long-suffering and of great goodness

I confess to you.

I confess with my whole heart

My neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments

My wrong doing, thinking and speaking:

The hurts I have done to others,

And the good I have left undone.

O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;

And raise me to newness of life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the God of love and power

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,

And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

Hymn – My Jesus I love Thee (Mission Praise 894)

  1. My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine;
    for thee all the follies of sin I resign;
    my gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art thou;
    if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
  2. I love thee because thou hast first loved me
    and purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree;
    I love thee for wearing the thorns on thy brow;
    if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
  3. I’ll love thee in life, I will love thee in death,
    and praise thee as long as thou lendest me breath,
    and say when the death-dew lies cold on my brow:
    If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
  4. In mansions of glory and endless delight,
    I’ll ever adore thee in heaven so bright;
    I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow:
    If ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
     (by William R Featherstone, 1864)

Our First Reading is from – Revelation Chap: 19

6 Then I heard what sounded like a crowd, like the sound of a roaring waterfall, like loud peals of thunder. I heard them say, “Praise God! For the Lord, our Almighty God, is King!

7 Let us rejoice and be glad; let us praise his greatness! For the time has come for the wedding of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself for it.

8 She has been given clean shining linen to wear.” (The linen is the good deeds of God’s people.)

9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Happy are those who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And the angel added, “These are the true words of God.”

10 I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “Don’t do it! I am a servant together with you and with other believers, all those who hold to the truth that Jesus revealed. Worship God!” For the truth that Jesus revealed is what inspires the prophets.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

 Our Second Reading is From – John Chap: 2

1 Two days later there was a wedding in the town of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there,

2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

3 When the wine had given out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They are out of wine.”

4 “You must not tell me what to do,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”

5 Jesus’ mother then told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 The Jews have rules about ritual washing, and for this purpose six stone water jars were there, each one large enough to hold between twenty and thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill these jars with water.” They filled them to the brim,

8 and then he told them, “Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast.” They took him the water,

9 which now had turned into wine, and he tasted it. He did not know where this wine had come from (but, of course, the servants who had drawn out the water knew); so he called the bridegroom

10 and said to him, “Everyone else serves the best wine first, and after the guests have drunk a lot, he serves the ordinary wine. But you have kept the best wine until now!”

11 Jesus performed this first miracle in Cana in Galilee; there he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Sermon Notes for the Third Sunday in Epiphany

Both the reading talked of weddings.

  • First from Revelation, the marriage of Christ to his church.
  • Second the wedding in Cana in Galilee

Mary knew Jesus was special from his birth, but until He was 30 there was very little to make Him stand out as being special.

Mary knew Jesus could do something but had no idea what.

He in effect saved the day for the host.

Jesus did not tell everyone what He had done, He did not seek publicity.

Weddings should be wonderful occasions when family and friends come together.

We should learn that we may not know (like Mary) how things will be resolved but God will overcome and ensure His word will be heard.

Amen

Hymn – Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy.

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

  1. Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy,
    Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
    Your bliss in our hearts, Lord,
    At the break of the day.

  1. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
    Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
    Be there at our labours and give us, we pray,
    Your strength in our hearts, Lord,
    At the noon of the day.

  1. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
    Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace.
    Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
    Your love in our hearts, Lord,
    At the eve of the day.

 Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,

  1. Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
    Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
    Your peace in our hearts, Lord,
    At the end of the day.

Hymn – When We Walk with the Lord

  1. When we walk with the Lord

in the light of his Word
What a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,

he abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Chorus  – Trust and obey,

for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,

but to trust and obey.

2. Not a shadow can rise,

not a cloud in the skies,
But his smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,

not a sigh nor a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Chorus – Trust and obey,

for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,

but to trust and obey.

3. Not a burden we bear,

not a sorrow we share,
But our toil he doth richly repay;
Not a grief nor a loss,

not a frown or a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.

Chorus – Trust and obey,

for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,

but to trust and obey.

4. But we never can prove

the delights of his love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favour he shows,

and the joy he bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Chorus – Trust and obey,

for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,

but to trust and obey.

5. Then in fellowship sweet

we will sit at his feet,
Or we will walk by his side in the way;
What he says we will do,

where he sends we will go,
Never fear, only trust and obey.

Chorus – Trust and obey,

for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,

but to trust and obey. (by John Henry Sammis – 1846 to1919)

Closing Prayer

May God give to you and to all those you love

his comfort and his peace,

and the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ

and the Love of God

and the fellowship  of the Holy Sprit

be with us all evermore.

All: Amen.
