Fourth Candle – The Candle of Joy – Mary the Mother of Jesus Leader: Light and peace, in Jesus Christ our Lord
All: Thanks be to God

Last Sunday we lit the Candle of Love. We light it and the Candles of Hope and Peace again as we remember that Jesus, born in Bethlehem, will come again to fulfil all of God’s promises and bring us everlasting peace and joy.

(A person lights the Candles of Hope, Peace, and Love)

Today we light the Fourth Candle of Advent, the Candle of Joy. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that a special child would be born to her she was filled with joy. She sang a song that began with the words: “My soul magnifies the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour. Just as the birth of Jesus gave great joy to his mother, so his presence in the world gave joy to those who had none before. He healed them and gave them hope and peace when they believed in him.

From hope, peace, and love grows joy.

We light the Candle of Joy to remind us that when Jesus is born in us we have joy and that through him there will be everlasting joy on earth.

(A person lights the Fourth Candle the Candle of Joy)

Joy is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at this candle we celebrate the joy we find in Jesus Christ.

Leader: Let us pray:
All: Thank you God for the joy you give us. We ask that as we wait for all your promises to come true, and for Christ to come again, that you would remain present with us. Help us today, and every day to worship you, to hear your word, and to do your will by sharing your joy with each other. We ask it in the name of the one who was born in Bethlehem.

All:  Amen.

Let us pray: All: Lord Jesus, Light of the World, the prophets said you would bring peace and save your people from trouble. Give peace in our hearts at Christmastide. We ask that as we wait for you to come again, that you would remain present with us. Help us today, and every day to worship you, to hear your word, and to do your will by sharing your peace with each other. We ask it in the name of the one who was born in Bethlehem.

Amen.

Hymn – Away in a Manger

  1. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.
  2. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh.
  3. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you

All: And also with you

Loving Lord,

Fill us with your life-giving,

joy-givingr peace-giving presence,

That we may praise you now with our lips,

and all the day long with our lives

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Cast your burden upon the Lord

All: And he will sustain you

Create in us clean hearts, O God

All: And renew a right spirit within us

Cast us not away from your Presence

All: And take not your Holy Spirit from us

Give us the joy of your saving help

All: And sustain us with your life-giving Spirit

Blessed be the Lord day by day

All: The God of our salvation, who bears our burdens.

We have a moment of quiet, to call to mind the things we

Have thought, said and done which we know grieve the God

who loves us

Come, let us return to the Lord and say:

All: Almighty God

Long-suffering and of great goodness

I confess to you.

I confess with my whole heart

My neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments

My wrong doing, thinking and speaking:

The hurts I have done to others,

And the good I have left undone.

O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you;

And raise me to newness of life;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

May the God of love and power

Forgive us and free us from our sins,

Heal and strengthen us by his Spirit,

And raise us to new life in Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

We praise God for his love and forgiveness with:-

Hymn – It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

1 It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven’s all-gracious King.”
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.

2 Still through the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o’er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o’er its Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.

3 And ye, beneath life’s crushing load,
whose forms are bending low,
who toil along the climbing way
with painful steps and slow,
look now! for glad and golden hours
come swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road,
and hear the angels sing!

4 For lo! the days are hastening on,
by prophet seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold
when peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendours fling,
and the whole world send back the song
which now the angels sing. (by
Edmund H. Sears – 1849)

Our First Reading is taken from – Luke Chap: 2

1 At that time Emperor Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Roman Empire.

2 When this first census took place, Quirinius was the governor of Syria.

3 Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own hometown.

4 Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of Bethlehem in Judea, the birthplace of King David. Joseph went there because he was a descendant of David.

5 He went to register with Mary, who was promised in marriage to him. She was pregnant,

6 and while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her baby.

7 She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger – there was no room for them to stay in the inn.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Our Second Reading is From – Luke Chap: 2

8 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks.

9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid,

10 but the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people.

11 This very day in David’s town your Savior was born – Christ the Lord!

12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God:

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!”

15 When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger.

17 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child.

18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said.

19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them.

20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.

This is the word of the Christ

All: Praise to you oh Christ

Sermon

We celebrate a birth. God’ chose Mary and Joseph they had no family near-by to come and look at the new baby but the shepherds and wise men did come and see him.

They bought presents.

We celebrate his birth and we should honour and live for Him.

Amen

HymnWhile shepherds watched

  1. While shepherds watched
    Their flocks by night
    All seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down
    And glory shone around
    And glory shone around

  1. “Fear not,” he said,
    For mighty dread
    Had seized their troubled minds
“Glad tidings of great joy I bring
    To you and all mankind,
    To you and all mankind.”

  1. “To you in David’s
    Town this day
    Is born of David’s line
The Saviour who is Christ the Lord
And this shall be the sign
And this shall be the sign.”

  1. “The heavenly Babe
    You there shall find
    To human view displayed
    And meanly wrapped
    In swathing bands
    And in a manger laid
    And in a manger laid.”

  1. Thus spake the seraph,
    And forthwith
    Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus
    Addressed their joyful song
    Addressed their joyful song

  1. “All glory be to
    God on high
    And to the earth be peace;
    Goodwill henceforth
    From heaven to men
    Begin and never cease
    Begin and never cease!”

On earth as in heaven.

Hymn – Silent Night, Holy Night

  1. Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
    Sleep in heavenly peace,
    Sleep in heavenly peace.

  1. Silent night, holy night!
    Shepherds quake at the sight.
    Glories stream from heaven afar
    Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
    Christ the Saviour is born!
    Christ the Saviour is born.

  1. Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
    With dawn of redeeming grace,
    Jesus Lord, at Thy birth.
    Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
    .

Closing Prayer

God of hope

Hymn In the Bleak Midwinter

  1. In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
    Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

  1. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
  1. Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
    Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

  1. What can I give Him, poor as I am?
    If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
    If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

The Lord bless us, and preserve us from all evil

And keep us in eternal life.

All: Amen
