Flower Festival August 2019

08 Jun 19

Over the 55 years that this festival has been held in St Laurence’s Church Ansley, it has never ceased to amaze that for each year, and in good time, a theme is sent. (an answer to prayer!). For 2019 the theme is “Rest”.

For those doing the arranging and the many other jobs that are associated with our annual Flower Festival it will seem anything but “restful”. But it is with confidence that we set forth each year knowing that God will make this event work as He wants it to work. We also know that, the energy, as well as all the other things that are needed, will be found and that rest will be given, when things have been cleared away.

Over the years the general format of the festival has changed little, but there are always slight changes to keep the whole event fresh and innovative. People come with ideas that are always considered and we do try to work them in whilst planning. However one area, probably the most difficult, is publicity. We are always pleased to have any help with this aspect for any church events. If you can help in any way it would be much appreciated. The best form of publicity that has been found to work is “Word of Mouth” Please do tell people!

The festival will start on Friday 23rd August from 6 p.m. and the short service of dedication will be at 7 p.m. The church will be open from 10 a.m. on Saturday and Monday, and after the morning service on the Sunday. Closing at 6 p.m. each evening. As usual during these times there will be refreshments available in the annexe, which if the weather is kind, can be enjoyed in the churchyard with views of countryside. The produce stall will be in the churchyard, as will the Madeira cake that is being raffled.

On Monday afternoon Ansley Morris will be dancing, weather permitting in the churchyard, or in the church if wet.

As for many years, there will be an opportunity to lay a stone on the pile and leave your burdens, or put a flower in an arrangement as a thanksgiving, or place a prayer in the Prayer Jar. These prayers will be brought to God before the end of the festival.

Again we will be supporting the Nuneaton Hospital League of Friends, and the Acorns Children’s Hospice as well as raising money for church funds. Entrance will be free, but we do say “Please place a gift here not only to thank God for the joy of the Flower Festival, but for all the joys that God has brought to you.”

Personal Profile
Rev. John Langlands

It is with great pleasure that I would like to welcome you to St Laurence.  Frances, my wife, and I have received a very warm welcome ourselves, so you will not be disappointed when you visit St Laurence.  I am also the Curate of the other churches in Ansley and Arley – St John’s, St Michael’s and St Wilfrid’s.

Being in a rural and farming area in the north part of Coventry Diocese is like coming home for us.  A number of years ago I pastored a church in rural Norfolk which was mainly surrounded by arable farms with some pigs and chickens.  The strong sense of community life was something very special.  This should be particularly valued in these days when many folk live such individual, separate and often lonely lives.

We have just had hot off the press a visiting card which I hope reflects what our church stands for: ‘You will not walk alone.  Together we are with you on life’s journey’.  Over these next weeks, months and years, I hope we can get to know you better and that you will find Frances and myself not just ‘churchy’ people but friends as well, who enjoy life and plenty of laughter!
