Where is God leading us?

07 Apr 15

If you do not know where you want to go you will, it is said, end up where you do not want to be.

So over the past few years we have, been seeking to find out where God is leading us and what He wants to be the focus for the life of our church.

The first such discussions led us to the formation of the Church's family prayer in which we focussed on the need to draw in families, to support members who could not get to church and to widen our outreach in the community.

Three years ago we sought to identify what it was that held us back and we focussed on the need for leadership to empower us all.

In September 2013 at morning service at St. Laurence's we used a questionnaire that has been fashioned over time and across the world to discern the strengths and weaknesses of the church. When the answers were collated  we identified the need to focus on our walk with God and to have, individually and as a Church, a spiritual life that was strong and passionate.

In January this year we did the same survey again. It was clear that in almost all areas of church life people were feeling distinctly more positive. There was much to celebrate. Yet two areas still need attention. First Passionate Spirituality, though much improved, is still the lowest quality. But nearly as low is the area of Need Orientated Outreach. So these are the challenges for the coming year. First we need to ensure through prayer, fellowship, Bible Study and worship that our roots and foundations are securely based in the love of God. Second we need to listen to know the needs of all parishioners and, having listened, to speak into that need the message of God's love as revealed in Jesus. In short growing deeper in God's love and in love reaching out to others.

This is the focus of the year ahead. Please pray that God will guide us to turn this longing into practical action.
